In 2008, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HSS) published “Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans,” which offers a great deal of information about the amount of exercise people should get to maintain their fitness and health. Because of the wide range of credible resources used in developing the publication, and the volume of research behind it, the “Physical Activity Guidelines” is currently considered the definitive work on the subject. The bellicon Home program integrates very well with the HSS guidelines because it clearly defines both the time and the intensity level of the exercise accomplished, making it easy to track the progress of weekly goals. It’s also a very convenient form of exercise, which not only makes it easier to maintain a regular workout schedule but also makes it easier to include short, 10 minute workouts (as mentioned in the HSS guidelines) throughout the day that can contribute a lot to achieving weekly goals.
Of course, the amount of exercise that’s right for you will depend on factors like your current fitness level and any additional health issues you may have, but, in general, the HSS “Guidelines” provide an excellent framework for setting fitness goals.

All of our workout videos were performed using the bellicon® mini-trampoline.
The bellicon is a high-quality mini-trampoline with a suspension system that uses specially designed bungee cords in place of springs, which is what most most mini-trampolines use. The bungees produce a very deep, low-impact bounce cycle, adding to the overall benefits of the exercise while minimizing adverse effects like stress on joints, vertebrae and ligaments. The bellicon bounce cycle is further improved through customization: they offer bungee cords in five levels of resistance strengths to accommodate users of different weights. Because of the exceptional quality of its materials, design and performance, the bellicon is our rebounder of choice.
The model size of the bellicons used in the workout videos was generally 44" or 49”, though the frame styles varied between the “Classic” version, which has a black frame, and the “Premium” version, which has a stainless steel frame. Many color combinations of mats and bungee cords were used, most trainers chose bellicon’s “Strong” bungee strength.
The number of calories burned during any kind of workout depends on several factors, including the types and intensities of the exercises performed as well as physical characteristics of the individual. Just as it is with running, swimming, calisthenics and other forms of aerobic exercise, a workout’s intensity and duration are the two most important elements in determining how many calories are consumed.
Each bellicon Home workout has an “Intensity Level” number associated with it, ranked from 1-10, which is our estimation of how challenging it is. Since bellicon Home workouts often combine several diverse types of exercises, these estimations are approximate.
This list can help you to compare the Intensity Levels used with bellicon Home workouts to other forms of physical activity. Because the the same exercise can effect people differently, consider this a rough, rather than exact, overview. The calorie numbers used in this list are based on someone of moderate height who weighs around 140 pounds.
Level 1: Dusting and polishing furniture ~ 2.5 calories/minute.
Level 2: Walking 2.5 miles/hour ~ 3.9 calories/minute.
Level 3: Stretching ~ 4.2 calories/minute.
Level 4: Sit-ups / crunches - moderate ~ 4.8 calories/minute.
Level 5: Ashtanga yoga ~ 5.5 calories/minute.
Level 6: Low impact aerobics ~ 6.4 calories/minute.
Level 7: Jogging ~ 7.4 calories/minute.
Level 8: Running 5 mph ~ 9.0 calories/minute.
Level 9: Running 8 mph ~ 14.3calories/minute.
Level 10: Running 10 mph ~ 19.0 calories/minute.
Another way to get a rough estimate of the calories burned while bouncing on a mini-trampoline is by using a person’s perceived level of exertion as a guide. The chart bellow uses three different intensity levels of exercise and the weight of the person exercising to estimate the calories being burned per minute.
Health Bounce: Gently bouncing where you feet never leave the mat. Breathing and heart
rates are increased, but only mildly.
Moderate Intensity: A more challenging level of exercise. Though there is a significant amount of physical exertion, the person performing it would still be able to carry on a conversation.
Very Intense: No conversation is possible during Very Intense exercise and even a very healthy, fit person needs to push themselves to continue. This is not an ideal intensity level for most people other than athletes and people in exceptional physical shape.

PCFBR is an acronym we use to represent the five major fitness areas that bellicon workouts address:
Power, Cardio, Flexibility, Balance and Relaxation.
Our online fitness program uses PCFBR on every workout video page: we include a PCFBR graph in the lower right corner of the initial video image with the title “Workout Breakdown.” The PCFBR graph provides a quick overview of the workout, showing the degree to which the workout addresses each of the PCFBR areas. These PCFBR charts can be helpful when customizing your workouts or when you wish to focus on particular fitness areas. You can view an example of the PCFBR chart on the “Relaxation Time” video page:
Here’s a brief description of the PCFBR categories:
- Power: overall muscular engagement the increases strength and tone.
- Cardio: increases metabolic rate, burns calories, builds endurance and strengthens the heart and lungs.
- Flexibility: increases range of motion and loosens muscles, tendons and joints.
- Balance: improves coordination, stability, posture and the body’s spacial awareness.
- Relaxation: for warming up, cooling down, relaxing muscles and tendons and reducing strain on the heart.
We use colors to indicate the main fitness area that a workout video or fitness plan is addressing.
Though most workouts will address many, or all, of the main fitness areas, workouts and fitness plans often have an area of particular focus, which will be indicated by a color that corresponds to one of the five PCFBR fitness categories.
